One central issue in the municipal response to COVID-19 is public health. Only if the spread of the virus can be contained and the infection risk reduced a recovery from the pandemic is possible in other fields of action.
Now that COVID-19 vaccines have been approved and vaccination campaigns have started worldwide, strategies must be developed to vaccinate citizens as efficiently and quickly as possible. The Public Health Cluster aims to support municipal practitioners in this endeavour by facilitating knowledge and experience sharing on effective vaccination strategies to optimize vaccine distribution.
Furthermore, the pandemic has shown that health departments need to enhance their digital work environment to better cope with municipal health challenges in the future and provide better administrative support. Therefore, another focus of the Public Health Cluster is on the digitalisation of health departments in municipalities.
In addition to infection control, another challenge for many municipalities is to maintain the provision of municipal services (e.g. electricity, water and waste disposal) to their citizens. The use of basic municipal services and the quality of their provision have a strong influence on the social, economic and environmental performance of a city. However, the Corona pandemic has worsened the financial situation of many municipalities around the world, which has a negative impact on municipal service delivery. This aspect of the Corona pandemic is being addressed and worked on in the Public Services Cluster.
